A few days before their family session by the river in North Park in Waynesboro, Virginia, Laura told me that she was expecting baby number three! I’ll be the first to tell you that motherhood doesn’t come easily to a lot of us. Laura had an ultrasound scheduled for the day of our shoot, so she told me she’d either be cancelling or we’d be celebrating. Thankfully the session happened, the evening was beautiful, and you could feel the excitement flowing through every smile, every hug, every glance, every splash.

There is no perfect formula for a family session, but man this one was glorious. So what made it so good??

First and foremost, parents, the best thing you can do is love your kids and love each other. Forget about the camera and focus on each other. Your kids literally can’t do anything wrong. I just want them to be kids and for your family to spend some quality time loving each other. I’ll just be there to capture it.

Second, I can’t tell you how many times people have said to me: “aren’t clouds good for photographs?” And if that’s what we get, we’ll totally make it work, but if there’s any chance of sun I’m going to take it! That glow is worth it, I promise.

Third, let’s get in the water! Obviously there isn’t a river flowing through every location, but the sentiment is the same. Let’s get comfortable on the floor, lay in the grass, run barefoot, splash in the sink, read books, jump on the bed… The opportunities are endless! We’ll get that “everyone smiling at the camera” shot, but then let’s PLAY!

I am now scheduling family sessions at home and out in the world through the end of 2024! And of course a riverside family session is always on the table 😉 Let’s connect!
